TL;DR

We partnered with a leading US airline loyalty program to re-imagine their existing “Boost" feature—enhancing it with new premium booking packages and VIP perks—driving 25-30% attach rates and 30% higher average order values.

The feature became so embedded in member culture that user community features it as the "ultimate guide" to improving the travelers’ status with the airline, proving thoughtful monetization can strengthen loyalty engagement.

The Challenge

Airline loyalty programs face a fundamental tension: how do you satisfy members' appetite for accelerated earning and added benefits without eroding program economics?

A leading US airline program approached us with this question. Their members were actively seeking ways to fast-track qualification for elite status requiring significant point accumulation—and the program wanted to reimagine the offering to deliver more member value while maintaining healthy unit economics.

The Solution

We redesigned the existing Boost feature and iterated on the product to introduce added benefits at two key moments: on the hotel details page and at checkout. The enhanced package includes VIP customer service, accelerated rewards posting, and additional loyalty points, with commission flowing directly to the airline in a single transaction.

The product was repositioned as an optional premium offering for members working toward improving their status with the airline.

The Boost feature became one of the most successful monetization innovations in the partnership's history.

  • 25-30%attach rate during end of year qualification season (25% baseline year-round)
  • 30%higher average order value on boosted reservations

What surprised both teams was how naturally members adopted Boost. They didn't view it as a "fee"—they saw it as a strategic tool to access added benefits. Travel rewards bloggers began featuring Boost in "ultimate guides," validating that the premium package resonated with the program's most engaged members.

What Made It Work

The feature resonated with members who had already decided to pursue elite status aggressively. Two segments drove adoption:

  • Strategic earners recognized the value of enhanced benefits to reach redemption thresholds faster
  • Convenience seekers appreciated the frictionless single-transaction experience with added VIP perks

Key Takeaways
  • Product iteration creates new value—reimagining existing features with enhanced benefits can unlock significant engagement without starting from scratch
  • Member enthusiasm is monetizable—members pursuing status goals will pay for acceleration if the value exchange is transparent
  • Multi-touchpoint architecture unlocks revenue—offering Boost at details page, and checkout captures different decision moments
  • Culture integration signals success—when the user communities organically promote your feature, you've strengthened program identity

How a Major Financial Institution Unlocked 57% Transaction Growth Through Strategic Pricing

Travel portals operated by banks face a defining tension: loyalty pricing - the strategy to dynamically raise hotel prices to help fund accelerators and other card benefits - protects program economics but risks losing members who compare shops and book elsewhere. Over-discount to compete, and you train members to wait for deals while eroding program economics. Hold rates high, and booking volume can stagnate.

How Jim Thompson boosted brand recognition and drove a 6.46% click-through rate with targeted advertising on Agoda

Jim Thompson, the iconic Thai lifestyle brand, aimed to expand its visibility among a diverse, global travel audience. To do so, they needed to place their promotional offers in front of travelers who were actively planning their trips. However, advertising channels tend be imprecise, often showing ads to a general audience instead of people who are actively planning a trip. This can lead to wasted budget and missed opportunities to connect with interested travelers.

ShopBack achieves 34% increase in repeat purchase rate and 16% increase in user base with Rocket Travel by Agoda

ShopBack is Asia-Pacific's leading shopping and rewards platform. They connect over 50 million users with 15 million merchants and partners, driving billions in sales for them annually. Given their current scale, it's hard to believe that just over a decade ago, ShopBack only started to set out to help people across the region save money with cashback on their everyday shopping. Very quickly after launching, ShopBack identified an opportunity to launch a dedicated travel vertical. Their goal for the vertical was to provide strong travel offerings that would drive high booking volumes for travel partners, enabling ShopBack to earn from these referrals and pass higher cashback deals back to their members. However, launching a travel vertical presented unique challenges for a platform primarily known for retail cashback. To win member confidence for these higher-value travel purchases and provide a truly competitive service from day one, ShopBack knew they needed two key elements: access to a vast selection of global travel options and the backing of an established, trusted name in the travel industry. This was about more than just adding inventory it was about ensuring a reliable and appealing booking experience that members would trust. “We needed a partner who could offer both scale and trust. Rocket Travel by Agoda gave us global reach with local credibility, which was key to winning our users’ confidence early on.” - Hazel Then, Regional Head of Commercial, ShopBack
